United 3-0 Tottenham Hotspur

A storming final half an hour saw United put Spurs to the sword, as the Champions kicked-off their title defence at Old Trafford.

Goals from Danny Welbeck, Anderson and Wayne Rooney gave United the 3-0 victory that looked very unlikely up until Welbeck opened the scoring. The goal sparked United to life and every time the Reds went forward thereafter, they looked like scoring.

Chris Smalling was once again impressive in his new right-back berth, while Phil Jones played with the assurance of a veteran on his full debut for United.

United’s line-up was the youngest ever fielded by Sir Alex Ferguson in a League game and is whetting United supporters’ collective appetites for what is to come over the forthcoming campaign.
