MUFC Through the Grapevine

Apologies for the lack of updates over the past few weeks or so, paid work has taken precedence but with a small amount of time now available, here’s BeatnikMUFC’s quick round up of the past couple of weeks.
United could be without Javier Hernandez for the first three League games of the season following his concussion, suffered during training in the build up to the game with the MLS All-Stars during last week. It was initially hoped that he would only miss Sunday’s Community Shield but Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed upon arrival back from the team’s US tour on Sunday that Chicharito will be out until September.
On the topic of the US tour, United looked very impressive as they achieved five victories from five. The opposition may not have been of the highest standard but it’s always nice to get that winning mentality fixed into the heads of the players ahead of the forthcoming season. The victory over Barcelona felt nice and while not exorcising the demons of Wembley, showed a maturity and discipline within the squad. The team’s play and work ethic when not in possession was excellent and when in control of the ball looked to play football. Stand-out performances in an impressive team display against the European Champions came from Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley – all the more impressive from the latter because of his unfamiliar role in central midfield. It was Cleverley’s stepping up from midfield and clever play that freed Michael Owen to score the winner in the 2-1 victory.
Wesley Sneijder remains an Inter Milan player for the time being but dropped a hint that he could be on his way out when questioned in Dublin, following Inter’s pasting at the hands of Manchester City. However, when quizzed directly about a proposed move to United the playmaker refused to comment and moved along hastily. Barcelona’s Thiago Alcantara – of whom United have supposedly had a £15m bid for rejected, has had a pre-season that makes Barca’s pursuit of Cesc Fabregas bafflingly unnecessary. The midfielder scored another screamer in their defeat at the hands of the Reds on Saturday and was extremely impressive throughout. If Barcelona do sign Fabregas it could open an exit door for Alcantara and one would hope that Sir Alex will be ready to pounce.
