Contrary to yesterday’s report on BeatnikMUFC, it appears that Blackburn’s 19-year-old defender, Phil Jones is on the verge of joining Manchester United.
The defender, who can also play as a holding midfielder, was linked in several papers yesterday, but the deal appeared to be purely speculation. However, the defender’s mother has supposedly told people that a deal is in place and further sources this afternoon have revealed that the England under-21 player has been having a medical at Carrington this morning.
Jones was previously linked with Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal, with the Anfield team widely expected to win the race for his signature but it now seems like he will move to Old Trafford in a deal that could be worth up to £18m in add-ons.
The deal could be the final nail in the coffin in Wes Brown’s career at Old Trafford and also puts Jonny Evans’ United future in doubt, unless Jones is to be deployed in the holding midfield role.
At just 19-years-old, Jones will not take up space in the 25-man squad until the 2014/15 season, by which time – success pending, he will have had three seasons at United and be classed as a “homegrown player” under Premier League rules.
