Manchester United 3-0 Liverpool
Old Trafford, March 23rd 2008
Manchester United outclassed 10-man Liverpool in a 3-0 victory that took them five-points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table.
Liverpool were on a seven match winning streak but United were to prove too strong for the Merseysiders even before Javier Mascherano’s sending-off for dissent just before half-time.
A rare Wes Brown goal from a Wayne Rooney cross gave United the lead in the 34th minute. It was only the defender’s third United goal and went in off his back after his gamble to attack the ball paid off. While Mascherano’s idiocy all but killed the game off as a contest, there was always the possibility that Liverpool could have created something out of nothing after United squandered countless chances to double their lead.
The Reds finally got the all important second goal in the 79th minute when Cristiano Ronaldo headed home from a corner. Almost as soon as the game restarted United regained possession of the ball and from a flowing move of wonderful passing, movement and one-touch football Nani hammered in the team’s deserved third goal from the edge of the area.
United went on to win their 17th League title, beating Wigan at the JJB Stadium on the final day of the season.
